I recently checked out a podcast of Vidal Sassoon. The legendary stylist was talking to Modern Salon about the new movie – Vidal Sassoon the Movie. He also shared his thoughts on the movie, insights from his 60-year career and gave some amazing advice for stylists and cosmetology students.

Vidal Sassoon The Movie, is produced by Michael Gordon, founder of the Bumble and Bumble hair salons. In the podcast, Vidal reveals that Michael Gordon wanted to give him a birthday present and that’s how the idea of producing a movie on the life of Vidal Sassoon emerged.

Vidal Sassoon The Movie made its world premiere last month at Tribeca Film Festival.

Michael Gordon and his team worked very hard to depict the life of the man who changed the world with a pair of scissors. This movie documents the life of Vidal Sassoon – from his days in a London orphanage, to his time as an Israeli soldier, through his incredible career.

Some amazing takeaways from his podcast are:

  • One can start from nothing and create something.
  • To become successful, stylists should have the “will” to achieve something and “discipline” while achieving it.
  • Stylists who get bored of cutting hair after some time, say 10 years, should quit the craft according to Vidal.
  • Stylists should get together more often to become more creative. They should share and bring new ideas on table. Such an attitude and atmosphere within the industry professionals would make hairdressing even better than what it is today.
  • Vidal Sassoon stressed on the importance of teamwork to develop something new and extra-ordinary.

According to Vidal, providing training is what makes him really proud of all his achievements from his 60 year career. He thinks that by providing awesome training you share new techniques and foster a mutual learning atmosphere.

ScissorBoy met up with master haircolorist Sue Pemberton at the 21st Contessa Awards (Canadian Hairstyling Awards) 2009 in Toronto.

I should have known I would run into Sue. Our paths keep crossing and overlapping more than any other stylist I can think of. I’ve been to random salons all over the place where she was scheduled to fly in the following week or had just left and several times now where we passed each other on the escalator at awards shows.

Today I finally had the chance to grab her for an interview. Sue tells us about the amazing co-incidence on how she and Amy E’s paths have also magically crossed.
