Hair King Farouk Shami was presented with a Legend Award by the International Salon/Spa Business Network (ISBN) at its 2012 Conference, “Be Inspired,” April 15-17, at the Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA for his success and innovation in the beauty industry.

Farouk Shami is known for having created environmentally friendly products and ammonia-free hair color long before it was the popular thing to do. However, his journey to become the Hair King wasn’t an easy one. After landing in the United States in 1965 with $71 and a dream, he worked hard and smart to create a billion dollar enterprise. He truly personifies the American dream!

Patrick Neville, ISBN Board Member and chief merchant for BeautyFirst said,

Farouk is not only an industry icon, he’s recognized by the general public as an artist, visionary, entrepreneur, humanitarian, celebrity and political candidate, thanks to his appearances on ‘The Apprentice’ and his run for governor of Texas.

While receiving his award Farouk Shami said,

I’m extremely honored and humbled to receive this award. Twenty-six years ago, doctors told me my career was at its end, but out of necessity came innovation and the beginning of a wonderful journey. I thank ISBN for this incredible recognition.

Many congratulations to Farouk for winning the Legend Award.

I remember meeting Farouk last year during their Be Safe, Be Beautiful conference that was held in Cancun in Mexico. We interviewed him where he talked about his inspiration to start this company and also stressed on why companies should manufacture beauty products that are safe for the environment and hairstylists.

After that we also filmed a fantastic stage show in which many former Miss Universe contestants walked as models for some top hair stylists from around the world like Mickey Svircevic and Rocky Vitelli.

John Steinberg – an icon in the Canadian hairdressing industry passed away last week. He had been courageously fighting with cancer since the last six months. His loss is indeed very sad.

John was one of Toronto’s best known hairstylists and his legendary career in the beauty industry lasted for 51 years. He started his career as a 15 year old apprentice under the legendary stylist Robert Edele in England in 1959. He had established his salon – John Steinberg & Associates Salon in 1991 and its friendly culture makes it one of the city’s most vibrant neighbourhoods.

John had represented L’Oreal Professional, Wella, Schwarzkopf and other companies at hairdressing conventions. He had also won the 2005 Contessa Community Service Award. Amongst his colleagues and within the industry, John was known to be a very generous and kind person.

We were honoured to have John with us on ScissorBoy TV as he talked about his adventure in the hair industry. In that episode, he not only gave great tips for wannabe hairstylists but also provided some inspirational advice for hairstylists.

This hair and beauty industry veteran lend us his inspirational advice while he was on our show by saying -

“All you need is a comb and a pair of scissors and you can go anywhere in the world!”

We’ll miss you John! Rest in peace.

Be-Cause Charity Kick-Off Gala

Be-Cause, founded by Millennium Salon Software, is a movement to unite the industry and pay recognition to individuals who go above and beyond the call of duty. The first Be-Cause charity event will be held in NYC, the day before the IBS Show, on March 5, 2011.

All proceeds raised will go to Beauty Changes Lives (BCL), an organization focused on raising funds for scholarship programs to benefit new students entering the beauty industry and provide advanced education programs for licensed beauty professionals.

The Be-Cause is a challenge of self-perseverance to be everything you can and want to be. The beauty industry is made up of amazing people who are stepping outside of the norm and doing more. Basically “BEING” is about being something that is true to who you are and has motivated you to be successful.

If you had to choose 1 word (your “be” word) what would it be? All of our interviewees have chosen a word that embodies their philosophy and it’s reminding the rest of the industry that they have one too. It is much easier to remember who you are and where you are going if you hold on to this word.

Be-Cause Gala 2011

If you’ll be in the New York City area on March 5, make sure you’re attending the Be-Cause Gala. It’s a great opportunity to support an amazing cause and network with top stylists like Ted Gibson and Tabatha Coffey.
